My stepmom Linda has always been the kind of person who demands attention. Ever since she married my dad when I was ten, she’s had this uncanny ability to make every moment revolve around her. From my birthday parties to school graduations to family dinners, somehow Linda always managed to shift the spotlight onto herself.
While I’ve grown used to her antics over the years, I never imagined she’d take things to a whole new level by showing up to my wedding in a white dress. In the weeks leading up to the big day, Linda had been dropping not-so-subtle hints about wanting a larger role in the ceremony. She’d flash her eyelashes and say things like, “Don’t you think I deserve a special part in your wedding?” I’d laugh it off and change the subject, figuring it was just another one of her attention-seeking comments. I assumed she’d find a way to make her presence known but didn’t expect anything outrageous. I was wrong.
On the morning of my wedding, I was in the bridal suite with my maid of honor, Sarah, getting ready and soaking up those last few peaceful moments before the ceremony. Suddenly, Sarah came rushing in looking completely stunned. She didn’t even say anything at first—just grabbed my arm and led me to the window. When I looked out, my jaw dropped. Linda had just stepped out of her car wearing a white, beaded wedding gown.
Not a dress that was sort of off-white or cream—this was full-on bridal white, with sparkle and flair, as if she were the one getting married. My heart sank, and a wave of anger surged through me. I couldn’t believe she’d do something so blatantly disrespectful. I stormed outside, furious. “Linda, are you serious? You can’t wear white to my wedding!” I snapped. She looked at me and smirked. “I just wanted to feel like a bride again. White looks amazing on me, and honestly, I think I deserve a little attention today.” My head was spinning. “This isn’t about you—it’s my wedding day! How could you think this is okay?” Before I could keep going, Tom, my soon-to-be husband, appeared beside me. He gently took my hand and said, “Let me take care of this.”

I paused, confused but trusting him. He walked over to Linda with a smile and said, “Linda, you really do look incredible. That dress is stunning. But since today is Anna’s wedding, we don’t want anyone to mistake who the bride is, right?” Linda looked caught off guard but tried to play along. “Well, yes, of course—” But Tom smoothly cut in, “Exactly. So I have the perfect idea to make sure you really stand out.” He called over a staff member and whispered something to them. A few minutes later, a waiter walked over holding a huge glass of red wine. With an Oscar-worthy “accident,” the waiter tripped and spilled the entire glass down the front of Linda’s sparkling white dress. Linda let out a dramatic gasp, clutching her gown in horror. “Oh my goodness, Linda! I’m so sorry!” Tom said with perfect mock-concern, though his eyes showed he was anything but sorry. “But honestly, that red really pops on you. It’s bold and unforgettable—just like you!” Linda was too stunned to speak, sputtering and dabbing at the stain as if it would magically disappear. Tom leaned in and added, “There’s a boutique just a block away. I’m sure they can help you find another dress. Maybe in a color that’s a little more appropriate.” She stormed off in a flurry of frustration, and when she returned later, she was wearing a soft pastel dress that blended in perfectly with the rest of the guests. By that time, the ceremony had already started, and she sat quietly for the rest of the day without another stunt. Thanks to Tom’s quick thinking and cool attitude, what could have been a disaster turned into a moment of triumph. The rest of the wedding went smoothly, and as we danced at the reception, I leaned in and whispered, “Remind me to thank you properly for that little rescue.” He smiled and said, “Anything for my bride.” Linda may have tried to steal the spotlight, but Tom made sure our day stayed exactly what it was meant to be—ours.
